Releasing July 1 - Little Dreamers!

Taken from a wonderful write up by John Stokes of Spankystokes.com:

If you're a fan of Okedoki's fantastically fun "Benny the Dreamer" figurine, then this new miniaturized set of the design from VTSS Toys is the perfect addition (or beginning) to your collection. Containing five version of the iconic piece — the original red "Benny the Dreamer," the white-garbed "Daydreamer," the sinisterly black "Night Terror," the gold electroplated "Alchemist," and the glow-in-the-dark "Lucid Dreamer" — are all interpreted as 3-inch tall, hand-painted resin pieces for the "Little Dreamers Collector Set." Limited to an edition of 280 copies, each set comes housed in a laser etched wooden box for a mere $145! With a price that can't be denied, this must own collection will be released tomorrow (July 1st, 2014) at 8AM Pacific time in the VTSS Toys online shop!

VTSS and I have worked on this project for over a year. We really wanted to make this release very special for our fans, family and friends who have supported us over the years. Along with new fans and friends, we hope to share our love for Benny the Dreamers to them as well.

Benny the Dreamer is very special to me, both spiritually and personally. I created him during a trying time in my life when I was very ill. I hope through Benny, many others can find joy and happiness, and pass on the vibe of peace and love for each other.

In this Little Dreamers Collectors Set, I chose the 5 designs as they all are significant.

The Alchemist(Gold Electroplating edition)- inspired by one of my favorite book by Paulo Coelho, is the art of turning something of no value into something precious. I think it's very crucial we are all alchemists. We have to transmute all things into love.

The Lucid Dreamer (Glow Edition) -  when I was little, I had these glow in the dark plastic dinosaurs. We would turn off the lights, and randomly hide them, and one by one we would seek them out. It was a fun game. I have been extremely fond of glow in the dark since then, as it reminds me of a very precious time from my childhood. I created Lucid Dreamer, as he is radiant even in the darkest places. I think this is a reoccurring theme for me, as we have to be the light when it is most dark, and shine.

Night Terror - even Benny the Dreamer has his inner demons and this is reflected in his mischievous grin and glowing green eyes. I really like this design. It's playful and shows a darker side of Benny the Dreamer.

Daydreamer - happy, carefree, and light. This is the epitome of bliss. I really love this design, it's so airy and happy, and his expression says it all.

Regular Edition - I made sure there was a slight change from the original design. Its very subtle, and its easily missed. I wanted to make Benny the Dreamer happier, so I changed the curvature of his mouth to express this. I wanted people to see Benny and have his happiness be contagious.

Hope you enjoy the many incarnations of Benny the Dreamer!!!!

Many blessings...

Okedoki

Sun and Moon

I have been working on this piece for a while now, trying to finish for a release this year.  Like many of my designs, the finished product is different from my original concept, as I let the life of the character and story develop as I sculpt it.

Originally, this was to be an elephant wearing a suit, while meditating. However, it has now turned into a turtle with 2 faces. One face is of enlightenment/yang/sun.  The other face is of reflection/yin/moon.

Here are the latest photos, still much to do yet, and tons of sanding before he's sent off to VTSS for reproduction. Hope you like it. :)

Toy Art 2.0 - coming very soon!

Thank you Vince and Mankas of VTSS!

Toy Art 2.0 (YES FINALLY!)

Over 50 contributors.
Over 2 years worth of work.
290 pages of Yummy Eye Candy!
Only 1000 for first printing.

I wanted to create a book about Toy Art, right from the source. From the artists, gallery owners, producers, collectors - the people who are the Toy Art community itself.

We are almost ready for final printing! These are the following contributors(I can't thank you enough to each one of you):

Kirby Kerr (Rotofugi), Justin Jewett (Rocket Society), Steve Agin, Dov Kelmer (DKE Toys), Gino Joukar (Toy Art Gallery), Rob Clarke (Foosh), Bigboy Cheng (SecretFresh), Julie Beezy (Pretty in Plastic), Amy Del Castillo & Luke Rook (Lulubell Toy Bodega), Brian Flynn (Super7), Raymond Choy (Toy2R), Vince Su (VTSS Designer Toys), Ryan Roberts Photograhy, Frank Kozik, Chauskoskis Walter Jacott, Ferg, Glenn L Barr, Chris Ryniak, Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters, Francesco de Molfetta, Huck Gee, Sergey Safonov, Bjorn Calleja, Doktor A, Yosiell Lorenzo, SpankyStokes, Ayleen Gaspar, J*RYU, Jesse Hernandez, Leecifer Gajda, Nakanari Shiau, Paul Kaiju, Mark Nagata, Skinner Man, Alvin Tan, Carl Kent-Smith, Dan Harris, Eduardo J. Lao, Kev Houseofzane Taylor, Kirkland Jue, Kristoffer Butiong, Laina Jones, Marcos Toys, Muschelschubser, Nicolas Caldas, Phil Lin, Sara Harvey, StacyJean, Vadim Tslaf, Frank Schaefer, Sucklord, Ron English.

I couldn't have done this project without my editor Jeremy Brautman! Much thanks to Jeremy for his countless hours of editing the book.

Of course, Vince of VTSS who has produced my art work for many years will also produce this book. From my sample copy of the book, it looks amazing! It has been such a huge project, from over 500 pages, Jeremy and I slashed (well, mostly Jeremy since I wanted to keep all 500 pages lol), down to 290. We unfortunately had to lose many great photos and essays, but the final product will make many of the contributors very proud.

I hope it will also inspire new artists to create and lover of art to collect Toy Art.

Book will release in about a month, please stay tuned.

3200 Year old Tree

from themindunleashed.org

Cloaked in the snows of California’s Sierra Nevada, the 3,200-year-old giant sequoia called the President rises 247 feet. Two other sequoias have wider trunks, but none has a larger crown, say the scientists who climbed it. The figure at top seems taller than the other climbers because he’s standing forward on one of the great limbs.

The trunk is 27 feet wide and the his mighty branches hold 2 billion needles, the most of any tree on the planet. On top of that, he still adds one cubic meter of wood per year – making him one of the fastest growing trees in the world.

Giant sequoias exist in only one place, where The President and smaller trees that make up his “House” and “Senate”, reside. On the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas in California, at 5000-8000 ft above sea level.

The team painstakingly put together a set of pulleys and levers to climb the tree. It took 32 days and the piecing together of 126 separate photos, but they managed it!
